History of Geylang West CC

Geylang West Community Club began humbly in 1961 in a small single-storey building at the end of Lorong 3 Geylang, about 1km from the main Geylang Road. The building, a wooden and zinc structure, was located in an area then known locally as Kampong Hock Soon.

Kampong Hock Soon was a bustling village. It was not easily accessible and the environment was unhealthy as the entire area was clustered with attap huts, squatters and swamp. Geylang West Community Club was rebuilt at the present site in 1977 and scored a first in Singapore when it won the first best community centre award in 1979 through the hard work of its volunteers, community leaders and the staff. It was further extended in 1981 by adding more facilities such as the multi-purpose hall and activity rooms.

Towards the 90’s, many new community clubs were built in new towns with modern facilities. In responding to the upgrading scheme of the People’s Association, the Management Committee of Geylang West Community Club decided to upgrade the club in 1995 hoping to achieve optimal use to the centre and also to further strengthen community bonding.

For the past 40 over years, the Geylang West Community Club has served as a focal point for community activities and helped to create friendship and ties between residents.
